Literature classes follow a structured student guide, allowing students to discuss the chapters they are reading. Students are encouraged to think deeply about each book's characters and theme. Students are expected to participate and answer in complete sentences. Short essays are assigned on occasion. Students are expected to come to class with the chapters read.
Classical Composition classes allow students to write essays following the steps in the fourteen-stage progymnasmata. Students identify the recognition, reversal, suffering, and narrative components of stories and add vivid figures of description to their compositions.
